Welcome to our How Long O Lord study.
Habakkuk presents us with some major dilemmas. He cries out with a question I suspect we can all relate to, “God, are you there?” and he wrestles with this problem. In fact, Habakkuk actually means “embrace” or “wrestle” and is derived from the Hebrew verb chabaq which means to physically embrace another "one who strongly enfolds".
It’s no wonder that we see this prophet in effect "wrestling" with God in the first two chapters with these questions about why God is doing what He is doing. And in Habakkuk 3, we see his heart has been transformed by God's replies and instead of resisting, he now embraces his God.
Habakkuk’s story is not neat and tidy, but God turned this prophet’s sighing into singing. And He will do that for you as well if you take time to wait before Him, listening to and trusting in His Word.
In the midst of life's dilemmas, we often find ourselves wrestling with questions that echo the cry of Habakkuk, "God, are you there?" His heartfelt struggle resonates with our own experiences, as we grapple with the uncertainties and challenges of our faith.
As we explore the first two chapters, we witness Habakkuk's honest wrestling with God's actions and intentions. His questions reflect the genuine struggles we all face. But something remarkable happens in Habakkuk 3—his heart is transformed by God's responses. In the face of uncertainty, he embraces his God, surrendering to His divine wisdom.
Within the narrative of Habakkuk, we witness a profound shift—from worry to worship, burden to blessing, and a shift in focus from the problem with God to an awe-inspiring revelation of who God truly is. In this transformation, Habakkuk's complaints become a source of consolation.
Let Habakkuk's story inspire you. Though his journey may not be neat and tidy, God turned his sighing into singing. And just as He did for Habakkuk, He longs to do the same for you. Take time to wait before Him, listening and trusting in His Word.
Finally, there is an overarching assignment during the study, and although this, too, is a bonus, we truly think it will be encouraging and a great reference for later.
